Project Overview
CFS-NHERI is the shorthand name for the collaborative project: Seismic Resiliency of Repetitively Framed Mid-Rise Cold-Formed Steel Buildings with principal funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Engineering for Natural Hazards program within the Civil Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation division of NSF under award IDs: #1663348 and #1663569. The seismic resistance of repetitively framed structures is unique due to the large overstrength and the significant contribution of non-designated systems in the lateral response. In this project, a set of experiments de-constructing the building into wall lines and separate components will be conducted to provide unique information in understanding benchmark full-scale shake table tests. The shake table tests will be conducted on the NSF-supported Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Using these experiments, for the first time, all major components of nonlinearity will be captured in complementary numerical building models conducted at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) that, when validated, will form the basis for wider seismic studies and evaluation. The principal investigators (PIs) include Tara Hutchinson at UCSD and Ben Schafer at JHU. The project also has a companion effort focused primarily on cold-formed steel framed floor and roof diaphragms led by coPI Kara Peterman at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
The testing and project scope provide a unique opportunity to examine full scale response of CFS-framed buildings, additional collaborations with industry, as well as other government and non-government organizations with objectives that overlap with the project objectives, including payload and related opportunities are underway. Contact the project PIs for additional information.
Update on Full-Scale Building Testing
Testing of the full-scale CFS-framed building at UCSD is currently scheduled for 2024. Testing has been extensively delayed due to the pandemic and upgrades at the NHERI@UCSD facilities which have taken the table offline for an extended period.
